The Parson family’s connection to the funeral profession began in the 1800s when early ancestors in Plymouth worked as carpenters and cabinet makers, gradually evolving into undertakers as communities began to commission private coffins. John Walter Parson became the first in the family formally recorded as an undertaker in the 1881 Census. From there, each generation carried the legacy forward: Walter Oscar Parson expanded the business in the early 20th century, and Walter Cyril Parson, known as Walter, steered it through wartime challenges. Under the stewardship of Wally Parson, the business grew from two offices to seven locations and earned a reputation for professionalism across Devon and Cornwall.
Richard Walter Parson, the fifth generation, was born in the funeral home and worked alongside his father for over twenty years. A management takeover in 1999 led to Wally’s retirement and, eventually, Richard’s decision to resign in 2010, closing a historic chapter. Honouring the past and shaping the future of funeral service
Born in Plymouth in the flat above the family funeral home, Richard Walter Parson spent his earliest years immersed in the world of funeral care. Determined to build his own path, he began his career outside the family business, training with The Great Southern Group in Kingston-upon-Thames. Within a year, he earned the National Association of Funeral Directors’ Diploma, achieving the highest pass mark in the country. In 1988, he returned to Plymouth to join the Parson family business, working alongside his father for two decades and learning every facet of providing support during times of loss.

After a management change in 1999 and his father’s retirement, Richard took a sabbatical to fulfil a childhood dream—sailing around the world in the Global Challenge Yacht Race. The experience inspired a fresh perspective and a desire to explore new opportunities in funeral service. He joined Co-op Funeral care, eventually becoming Care Excellence Manager for the south of the UK. In this national leadership role, Richard advised on regulatory standards and trained funeral professionals across the region. Today, he serves as Chair of the British Institute of Embalmers (South West Division) and leads WestCountry Funeral Service, bringing generations of experience to families in the local area.
